Girls on the Run Greater Chesapeake SPRING 2024 presented by MedStar Health Volunteer

Girls on the Run Greater Chesapeake

Thank you for your interest in volunteering for Girls on the Run of the Greater Chesapeake! Anyone who has been to a Girls on the Run 5K knows that it is unlike any other running event.  It is a celebration of and for the girls who are completing the Girls on the Run of the Greater Chesapeake program.  Positive energy abounds as the girls participate in pre-5K fun, dance to warm-up music, and gather with their teammates as they head to the starting line.  However, the 5K magic would not be possible without the support of amazing volunteers. As girls from across our area come together to achieve their goals on 5K day, they will be depending on volunteers like you to help them SHINE!

Volunteer Areas:

Bib Pick Up: Help get out 5K buddies ready to run, hop, skip, walk, or roll across the finish line with their GOTR participant. When you help at the 5K bib pick up tent you will be checking in the 5K buddies, handing them their 5K bib and shirt and sending them on their way. We will also have a few volunteers help with day of registration.

Bike Lead/Marshal: Help guide all the GOTRGC 5K participants through the course. You will be at the very front of the first wave and will lead the girls through the course as well as keeping an eye out for any potential obstacles that girls should be made aware about.

Coach Check-In: Help get all of our amazing coaches checked in for the 5K. At coach check in you will be responsible for collecting team bags and handing the coaches their team 5K bag with the coach and girl bibs, and girl medals inside.

Course Marshals: Course Marshals play an important role in helping to ensure the safety of all of our 5K participants. As a course marshal, you will be assigned a station along the 5K course where you will help direct participants and monitor to make sure everyone is following the course correctly and safely. You will also be cheering the participants on and helping to activate their star power as they pass.

Volunteer Check-In: Help get your co-volunteers checked in and excited for their 5K areas!

Pre-5K Fun: (Happy Hair, Bling Your Bib, & more): Help get the participants excited and pumped up for their 5K by helping them decorate their hair (color hair spray and clips), bling out their 5K bibs and make slap bracelets.

Post 5K Refreshments: Help keep Girls on the Run participants fueled and refreshed by setting up and monitoring our post 5K refreshment tent.

Start Line Support: Help get the 5K started by supporting the start line. In this role, you will help guide participants to the start line, holding wave signs and pennant flags to separate the different waves.

Finish Line Support: Help make the 5K memorable for every girl who crosses the finish line. Here, you can stay and help cheer every girl across the finish line until the last girl crosses.

Sparkle Sweepers: Sparkle Sweepers play an important role in the 5K as they help spread positivity, encouragement, and joy while ensuring every girl crosses the finish line safely! As a Sparkle Sweeper, you will walk the 5K course and be our designated last group to start the race. The sparkle sweepers will start 10 minutes after the last wave goes. Our sparkle sweepers will have some special props to use and wear but feel free to bring your favorite tutu, sign, or noisemaker to use while you walk the course.

Water Stop: Help keep GOTR participants refreshed out on the course. As a water stop volunteer, you will help set up and break down the water stop as well as hand water out to all the participants coming by on the course.
