We inspire girls to be joyful, healthy and confident using a fun, experience-based curriculum which creatively integrates running.
Girls on the Run is a transformational physical activity–based positive youth development program for 8 to 14 year-old girls designed to develop and enhance girls’ competencies to successfully navigate life experiences. At Girls on the Run, trained and supportive volunteer coaches teach life skills through dynamic, conversation-based lessons and running games. The program culminates with the girls being physically and emotionally prepared to complete a celebratory 5k. The goals (the 5 C’s) of the program are to develop and improve competence, unleash confidence through accomplishment, develop strength of character, respond to others and oneself with care and compassion, create positive connections with peers and adults, and make a meaningful contribution to community, all while establishing a lifetime appreciation of health and fitness.
OUR COUNCIL and GOALS:
Girls on the Run – Maine officially received GOTR council status in April 2012 and became a 501c3 in July 2012. Our first teams, a total of 37 girls, completed their season and celebratory 5k in November 2012. In our short organizational history, GOTR-ME has seen an incredible demand for our programming, and been able to respond with a rapid but controlled growth. In each of our subsequent seasons we have served over 165 girls, bringing our total to over 350 girls served throughout Southern Maine in our first three seasons. In 2015, 680 girls participated in the program, with 950 expected in 2016. GOTR-ME plans to grow beyond Southern Maine in a strategic, careful, and sustainable way, using a thorough evaluation process to assess applications for new sites based on our ability to provide administrative, financial, and volunteer support. By 2020, we aim to be serving over 1800 girls/yr, but we must first increase our financial reserves to provide scholarships as needed. With the help of donors and volunteers, we can establish new sites and reach many more girls in Maine.
